Until now, 3D surround sound was only available for Android smartphones at Tidal. Now the music streaming service is significantly expanding support for the Dolby Atmos sound format.
New York / Berlin (dpa / tmn) - The music service Tidal makes music with surround sound available in an innovative format Dolby Atmos on significantly more devices.
In the future, the songs can also be played via the Tidal app on the streaming box Apple TV 4K, on two models of Amazon's Fire TV stick, the Fire TV box and Nvidia's streaming box Shield TV. This was announced by Dolby and Tidal on Thursday.
Some TV sets from Sony and Philips also support the new Tidal app, so that their owners can play the music via an Atmos soundbar, for example.
This makes music in Atmos format available to significantly more users in one fell swoop. So far, it was only available on Tidal via Android smartphones and on Amazon Music via the company's own Echo Studio speaker.
Atmos is a Dolby development designed to provide better surround sound. The sound waves for the ambient effect are not only reflected over the walls, but also over the ceiling. Therefore special loudspeakers are required, which are directed upwards. Several manufacturers also offer sound bars with Atmos. The format was originally used for films - but Dolby also wants to establish it for music with spatial sound. For this, the songs have to be mixed again.
Atmos music has its price: Tidal only offers the most expensive subscription version for 20 euros a month. The service now doubles the free trial period for interested parties to 60 days.
