(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 28 - According to a new study launched today by Save the Children and UNICEF, the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic could cause an increase in the number of children in conditions of family poverty, up to 86 million more by the end 2020, or an increase of 15%.
The study points out that, without immediate action to protect families from the financial difficulties caused by the pandemic, the total number of children living under the national poverty line in low- and middle-income countries could reach 672 million by the end of the year.
About 2 out of 3 of these children live in sub-Saharan Africa and southern Asia.
Countries in Europe and Central Asia could see the most significant increase, up to 44% in the region.
Latin America and the Caribbean could see a 22% increase.
