Pesto, pasta and parmesan - that's all you need for a quick meal. Öko-Test has now examined finished green pesto and found many pollutants.

  • Öko-Test  examined 20 green pestos .
  • Well-known brands such as Barilla , Bertolli , Cucina (Aldi) or Alnatura were tested  .
  • In addition to basil * and hard cheese, the testers also found an alarming  number of pollutants.

Pasta with pesto is quick to make and tastes good to everyone. In order to save even more time, they at least make the pesto themselves, but grab the finished product from the glass or mug. The results of an Öko-Test examination show that this is not a particularly good idea.

The consumer magazine took a close look at 20 different varieties of the Italian classic and tested them primarily for harmful substances. The results could quickly spoil your appetite.

Öko-Test checks green pesto: almost all products are contaminated with mineral oil

A simple pesto verde , i.e. green pesto, does not need many ingredients: basil, pine nuts, garlic, olive oil * and parmesan only have to be pureed and the delicious seasoning paste for the pasta * is ready.

In the ready-made pestos that Öko-Test checked, however, there were completely different "ingredients". Components of  mineral oil were found in  all pestos

According to the Öko-Test, the mineral oil may get into the pesto in the production process. Lubricating oils on the systems are a potential source of the contaminants that should be removed. Because: mineral oil can accumulate in human adipose tissue and in the organs and is suspected of being carcinogenic .

Pesto: Bertolli and Barilla fail the eco test

Now consumers could suspect that they are more protected from harmful substances with more expensive pesto varieties than with cheaper discounter goods. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The testers were able to detect mineral oil in different concentrations in all sauces , from discounters and branded goods to organic products.

The values were particularly high for the  Barilla Pesto alla Genovese and the  Bertolli Pesto Verde . These popular brands therefore performed particularly poorly in the  eco-test  and were rated "insufficient" - as were seven other varieties.

Eco test: Unfortunately not only mineral oil in pesto - pesticides are also a problem

As if the mineral oil residues weren't enough reason for concerned consumers, the testers were also  able to detect pesticides in the pestos . Pesticides and insecticides were found in 15 of the tested pestos. The products from Bertolli and Barilla were also present here. But the own brands of  Aldi , Edeka, K-Classic and Rewe also performed poorly here.

Eco test: organic pesto also does poorly

Unfortunately, even buyers of organic pesto cannot imagine that they are safe. The testers got four organic brands under the microscope and the results were not much better. No pesticides were detected, but the picture was the same for mineral oil as for conventional products. The pesto verde from Alnatura was so heavily contaminated with mineral oil and plasticizers (MOSH, MOAH) that it even failed with the grade " insufficient ".
