Öko-Test examined green ready-made pesto from the supermarket for pollutants - and also found it. 60 percent of pestos are deficient or fail.

Öko-Test examined green ready-made pesto from the supermarket for pollutants - and also found it. 60 percent of pestos are deficient or fail.

  • Öko-Test examined 20 green pestos from discounters, supermarkets and health food stores.
  • Well-known brands such as Barilla , Bertolli , Cucina (Aldi) or Alnatura were tested .
  • In addition to basil and hard cheese, the testers also found mineral oil , plasticizers and pesticides .

Frankfurt am Main - Mamma mia! The results of Öko-Test really leave the spaghetti with pesto stuck in your throat. The consumer magazine has tested 20 different varieties of the Italian classic and tested them for harmful substances. The result is  disastrous , as RUHR24.de * reports.

Öko-Test finds mineral oil in all pestos

Pesto is actually a fine thing. It tastes delicious and with a ready-made product from the supermarket you can also quickly prepare a good dinner. But judging by the test results from Öko-Test , the basil sauce is anything but recommendable.

Because components of mineral oil were found in all pestos . Mineral oil can accumulate in human adipose tissue and in the organs. It is also suspected to be carcinogenic .

Öko-Test: How does mineral oil get into the pesto?

According to the Öko-Test , the mineral oil can get into the pesto , for example, through lubricating oils at the production facilities . The consumer portal therefore always appeals to the manufacturers to find the sources of the pollution and, if necessary, to change the production processes.

Pesto: Brands like Barilla and Bertolli fail in Öko-Test

No matter whether cheap pesto from discounters , organic pesto or an expensive branded product - mineral oil has been detected in all sauces. The values were particularly high in some varieties.

These include the Barilla Pesto alla Genovese or the Bertolli Pesto Verde . Both brands therefore emerged as clear losers from the eco-test . In addition to seven other products, they scored " unsatisfactory ". In plain language, this means that they did not pass the test because of questionable ingredients. All the losers and winners in the test are in the June edition of Öko-Test (paid item).

Eco test: Pesto has not only a problem with mineral oil, but also with pesticides

But the Italian classic has not only a problem with mineral oil residues, but also with pesticides . In 15 of the pestos tested, an increased content of spray and insecticides was found in the Öko-Test laboratory

The pesto from Barilla and Bertolli was again affected . Traces of pesticides were also found in the private labels of Netto (Mondo Italiano Pesto alla Genovese), Edeka (Gut & Günstig Pesto alle Genovese), Aldi Nord / Süd (Cucina Pesto alle Genovese) and Rewe (Yes! Pesto Verde) will.

Öko-Test: Pesto in organic quality also with poor test results

Among the 20 tested basil - pesto were also four organic brands. But whoever thinks that organic food is automatically better has been wrong. Because even the pesto in supposed organic quality did not really score well in the Öko-Test test .

No pesticides were found in any of the pestos, but mineral oil was found in all four varieties. The ingredients in the Pesto Verde from Alnatura were so high that the test failed with a grade of " insufficient ". Because there are also residues of plasticizers in addition to the mineral oil

The found Öko-Test also in some conventional Pestos. But the values were only increased for Alnatura and the pesto from Kaufland (K-Classic Pesto alle Genovese) (more service items at RUHR24.de) *.

Bad marks for pesto in eco-test

So what to do if you can't even trust the organic quality pestos and all the other Öko-Test brands are rated poorly? With the right recipe , it's best to make the pesto yourself.

At first glance, this may seem a little more complex than the ready -made pesto from the glass, but it is actually almost as quick and you can be sure which ingredients are contained in the pesto

Make pesto yourself: the Italian classic is so easy

Another advantage of homemade pesto is that you can vary the composition as you like and have more variety on your plate.

This makes it easy to replace basil, which you can easily grow yourself with these tips, with other greens. For example, wild garlic, carrot green or parsley also taste really delicious.

Öko-Test: Test winners in the pesto test only get "satisfactory"

Because judging by Öko-Test , you should currently stay away from the pesto bought . Because even the two test winners only get the grade "satisfactory". This includes an organic pesto.

In the end, there is still good news: the taste of all brands is reliable . So if you don't care about pesticides, mineral oil residues and plasticizers, you can at least be sure of their taste - in all cases, Öko-Test was able to recognize a clear basil note and classified the pestos as "good and" ok "in taste.
