Pay contactless - who is charged fees for checking or credit cards?

Not only in the corona crisis * do many Germans find it practical to pay for their purchases contactlessly with a checking or credit card . Because with contactless payment * , buyers do not have to insert their plastic cards into a reader and enter a PIN at the terminal, they only need to hold the card or smartphone at the terminal.

And as a representative survey published on May 22 among 1,003 people on behalf of the digital association Bitkom has now shown, more and more Germans are making use of it in the corona crisis : Three quarters of the respondents (75 percent) are currently trying to make payments with cash as often as possible going to avoid . At the same time, 7 out of 10 respondents (71 percent) want more ways to pay without contact.

What not everyone has in mind when making cashless payments is the fees that some banks charge. According to a report by businessinsider.de, which relies on an evaluation of the consumer portal biallo.de, banks and savings banks have increased fees in recent months and are demanding up to 70 cents for a contactless payment process * with a checking or credit card.

A total of 440 Volks- und Raiffeisenbanken and 380 Sparkassen  examined the consumer portal and found out that every second institute collects fees for the cashless payment , writes businessinsider.de specifically.

Many savings banks and Volksbanks charge fees when paying with an EC card

The Niederrheinische Sparkasse Rhein-Lippe is demanding the maximum price of 70 cents per transaction for the 'Giro Nispa Klassik' account model, reports the portal. "Biallo.de" also calculated that with an average of two card payments a day, customers would be charged an additional 504 euros by the end of the year . With Haspa, Germany's largest savings bank is also charging a fee from customers who use the "Classic" account model - "50 cents per card transaction", the report says.

Businessinsider.de also writes that not all customers are equally affected by the fees . What is striking about the investigation is that you would meet the majority of customers who have an inexpensive 'classic account', online accounts or basic accounts. With expensive premium accounts that cost at least ten euros per month, no fees for card payments would be charged, according to the portal.

Consumers should inquire about bank fees

The report also says: "Of the total of 820 financial institutions examined, 401 banks and savings banks charge fees for card transactions. On average, they amount to 34 cents per transaction, but fluctuate between 2 and 70 cents depending on the institution."

Not all consumers are aware of this. You should look out for the note " paperless bookings " in the price-performance list of a bank or savings bank, writes the portal.
