Working part-time after parental leave - warning of part-time trap

Becoming a parent is beautiful, exciting - and involves many new tasks. Many new mothers and fathers want to dedicate those after the birth of the child and make the job a break.

Depending on how long it takes, it can be difficult to get back to work . Experts provide tips for returning to work after parental leave .

First of all, the question probably arises for many: Can I get my job back exactly? "It depends on the employment contract ," explains Till Bender from the legal protection department of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB). "What is in there is still available after parental leave." If there is a very specific stipulation of which job he or she will take on, you will continue to do so exactly after your return - provided that this area of work also exists.

If the employment contract only states that you are employed as an employee in an area or even that the employee has to take on any other job in the company according to his qualifications, then the employer can also have the returnee do a different job than before .

Many parents do not want to or cannot necessarily work full time again . You have the option to go part-time . However, this is not a special regulation for parents, but according to the part-time and temporary law, this option exists for all employees, as Bender explains. However, he warns of the so-called part-time trap: "Women fall into this trap in particular: They reduce working hours after the birth of the child and do not come out again."

It is not compulsory to increase working hours - part-time bridge possible

Because the employer is not obliged to increase the hours at the request of the employee . One option for employees in companies with 45 or more employees is therefore to take advantage of the so-called part -time bridge : In this case, the employee works part-time for a limited period and works again as before after the specified period.

Bender mentions another possibility of working part-time during his parental leave  . For example, you could not work for the first year and up to 30 hours in the second and third years of parental leave. After three years, you take over the full hours again.

Make arrangements before parental leave

Mediator and coach Maxi Weiss recommends discussing how and in what rhythm you want to exchange ideas with your boss and colleagues before you take parental leave. If you only take a short break , you can check your emails from time to time or follow the intranet, for example. If you take a long break, you might have the occasional phone call or a lunch with your colleagues.

Talking to the manager beforehand about the tasks and planning the handover with the representative helps to return with confidence - even if something new is expected in the old job. "You shouldn't assume that everything will work as it was before," emphasizes coach and consultant Anne Forster from Zurich.

According to Weiss, a bit of humility and a thank you do not hurt when dealing with your own representation: When handing over, you should show interest in new developments or changes and ask quietly what the representation did differently from yourself. "You shouldn't be shy to take over some of the new one. "

However, Forster warns against being too modest when it comes to promotions or further training . "When I'm back and doing something again in my job, I can also demand something," Forster emphasizes.
