The zoo located in Val-de-Reuil in Eure, specializing in particular in rare or endangered species, reopened on May 16

The Biotropica zoo, located in Val-de-Reuil (Eure) reopened on May 16. And even if measures to limit attendance at the site and welcome the public in adequate sanitary conditions had to be taken, this step was eagerly awaited by François Huyghe, the director, and his teams of carers. All are happy to reveal to visitors the new inhabitants of the park, born during confinement.

"We are fortunate to often have births which is not the case everywhere else," says the veterinarian. “For example, our lazy couple is in its fifth baby, one per year, which is relatively rare for this species. But beware, to see the cute fur ball, you have to come in the morning. "It is an animal that is not very active the rest of the day," recognizes the director of Biotropica.

On the other hand, no worries to see the five young meerkats who are starting to come out of their burrows. “Today we have a good group of fifteen individuals that we regularly renew. The young people who grow up then go to other parks with which we are in contact across Europe within the framework of breeding programs. We could not, for obvious reasons of space, keep all the animals ”, continues François Huyghe.

As for penguins, ten babies were born recently and the two parents, who arrived in Biotropica in 2015, take turns to feed them. Which is not easy. But as their caregiver, Sarah Dontenville explains: “Adults take very good care of their young. We do not intervene at all. "

Always appreciated by the little ones, around twenty baby goats have arrived in recent weeks. “We had the impression that they were awaiting the return of visitors. Because here, it is the public who comes to visit them in their enclosure ”, assures the park manager. “Besides, during confinement, we didn't really notice any change in behavior on the part of our animals. Visitors are simply part of their landscape. "
