Raccoons are clever animals. And they are lazy. Those who want to prevent the animals from looking for food in the garbage can can take advantage of this.
Hamburg (dpa / tmn) - Raccoons are omnivores - but they especially like fruit, vegetables and insects, leftovers and dog food.
The clever animals also find much of this in garbage cans. This is much easier and more convenient for them than climbing a fruit tree or digging for insects in the ground, explains the animal protection organization Vier Pfoten.
Therefore, you simply have to take advantage of the convenience of the animals and turn the tables: if garbage cans are secured with an extra lock or sheds in which dog food is stored are locked, raccoons quickly give up. You then devote yourself to the simpler, natural search method.
The same applies if you want to prevent the animals from creating a home in the attic: the harder it is for them, the more likely they are to give up the plan.
For example, branches on the building that are suitable for climbing should be shortened. And downpipes on the facade can be covered with smooth metal sleeves. One should refrain from attaching a barbed wire here. This can injure the raccoons - or even serve as a climbing aid.
