Currants are wonderfully sweet and sour and at the same time ripen in large quantities. Make juice easily and quickly and enjoy it in summer.

  • Currants contain a lot of juice.
  • If you want to process many currants at once, you can easily make juice yourself.
  • Here's how it works.

Anyone who has a currant bush in the garden knows it: the small red or black fruits ripen in large quantities at the same time. If you are a bit confused as to what to do with the many berries (except bake currant and chocolate muffins *), you should try juice or syrup. You don't even have to do the work to remove the currants from the stems.

How to make currant juice yourself

You need:

  • 1 kg of red currants
  • 250 g black currants (alternatively also red)
  • 150 g of sugar
  • 350 ml water
  • Fill a bucket with cold water and put the currant with a stem in it. After a while, the dirt and insects should have collected on the water surface. Skim this off and rinse the currants again thoroughly under running water.
  • Now stir the sugar into the water until it has dissolved.
  • Boil the currants in the sugar water until they burst and release their juice.
  • Now pour the whole thing through a sieve and catch the juice.
  • Boil the juice again briefly and fill it into clean, best-boiled bottles.
  • Cooled, sealed airtight and then stored in the refrigerator, your homemade currant juice will keep for about two weeks.

Juice currants with the pressure cooker

You can also juice currants quickly and easily with the pressure cooker:

  • Wash the currants for this previously described.
  • Pour 250 ml of water into your pressure cooker.
  • Place the berries in the perforated insert of the pressure cooker.
  • Place this insert on a metal bowl or an unperforated insert for the pressure cooker.
  • Place the inserts in the pressure cooker.
  • Close the pot and heat it up.
  • If cooking level two is reached (depending on the pot), you can reduce the heat and cook the currants for 12 minutes.
  • Do not let off the steam quickly afterwards, but let the pot cool down on its own until the pressure is gone and you can open the pot.
  • You can now boil the juice that has collected in the non-perforated insert again with a little sugar and then pour it into the clean bottles.
  • Get summer in your glass now: make rhubarb syrup yourself

How to enjoy your homemade currant juice

No matter how you got the currant juice, you can enjoy it neat, but also use it for mixed drinks . Simply pour it into a glass and pour it with mineral water or sparkling wine (of course also alcohol-free). A few ice cubes and fresh currants make your summer drink perfect. The currant juice can also be mixed with vodka or gin . Or you can use it to make jelly . Try it out.
