In a message to English-speaking believers, the Sovereign Pontiff also deplored the violence that followed the death of the Afro-American

Pope Francis considers any form of racism, a “sin”, to be intolerable in reaction to the death in Minneapolis (United States) of George Floyd, but he also condemned the violence that followed.

"We can neither tolerate nor condone any form of racism or exclusion, and claim to defend the sanctity of all human life," said Pope Francis during his Wednesday audience. Discrimination does not however allow the clashes observed during certain demonstrations: "the violence of the last nights is self-destructive", judged the head of the Catholic Church, "nothing is gained with violence, while so much is happening lose ”.

We cannot tolerate or condone any form of racism or exclusion. At the same time, we must recognize that violence is self-destructive. Violence is useless. Pray for reconciliation and peace.

"I am with great concern the painful social disorders which are taking place in your nation these days, following the tragic death of Mr. George Floyd," said Pope Francis in a specific message to believers in the English language, and translated on social media. He said he prayed for "the rest of the soul" of George Floyd and "for all those who lost their lives because of the sin of racism".

Pope Francis, on the other hand, said nothing about the staging that Donald Trump indulged in Monday, being photographed in front of a degraded church in Washington, a bible in hand.

"I find it disconcerting and reprehensible that a Catholic site allows to be hijacked and manipulated in such a blatant way (and) that violates our religious principles", for his part denounced in a press release the archbishop of Washington, Wilton Gregory. John Paul II, he added, "would certainly not have endorsed the use of tear gas and other deterrents to silence, disperse or intimidate (the demonstrators) to be photographed in front of a place of prayer and peace ”.
