Conte: 'We need a new beginning, unity to redesign Italy'

Prime Minister's New Deal: 'General States on Taxes and Infrastructure. Hard on Aspi, does not close on narrow bridge. Via a tax reform (ANSA)

A new beginning". Giuseppe Conte tries to start from here. Putting "behind" the most acute phase of the health crisis, although "not" being the virus "still disappeared", it is already biting the economic crisis and social tensions appear. "We must hurry," said the premier aware of the urgencies. Therefore it offers the opposition and all the social partners a discussion table, already next week, to elaborate a "rebirth plan". It is the work base to be presented to Europe to spend the "treasure" that will come from the Recovery Fund, in the "system", in the hope of obtaining resources that are not scarce this year. "Overcoming structural problems and redesigning the country", is the demanding 'title': from high speed (without "prejudices" towards a work like the Bridge over the Strait) to lower and progressive taxes ("they will pay everyone but they will pay everyone less ", he assures), from leaner bureaucracy and reform of office abuse to tax advantage for the South. Next week, perhaps from Monday, at Villa Pamphili Conte he will convene the general states. But soon he will have to decide on Autostrade, towards which he uses very harsh words. The "short" government may also have to adopt new one-off measures to support sectors, from tourism to crafts, close to collapse. With the awareness that his work will also be judged on how he will maintain the prime minister's commitment to reopen the school in September in "renovated classrooms".

The Prime Minister accepts the message sent on 2 June to all political forces by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. And he explains that he wants to seize the "historical opportunity" of the Recovery Fund by calling together all the "main players of the Italy system" and "single brilliant minds". Even those who, like Carlo Bonomi, have used "absolutely unhappy expressions" towards the government and politics compared to Covid: "I am sure that Confindustria will present forward-looking projects not only for reducing taxes", challenges him. Specifying to industrialists that in Italy there will be no "sovietization" of companies. The working base, he explains, is the report of Vittorio Colao's task force which will be delivered "in days". The government, without going through reshuffles or enlargements, offers the opposition to write together "the Renaissance project" and promises - Conte assures - not to 'use' the 172 billion that could come from the Recovery Fund as a "treasure" to make money consent. The dialogue has already intensified between the majority, both Democratic Party and Iv, and Forza Italia, after the opening letter to dialogue by Silvio Berlusconi. While Matteo Salvini does not seem to trust too much and "challenges" Conte not to exclude the opposition "as done so far" and to take into consideration the Northern League proposals on "zero bureaucracy and flat tax". Caustic Giorgia Meloni: behind the press conference convened by Conte in the courtyard of Palazzo Chigi on the day of total reopening of the movement between the regions, there are only new "promises", with a "surreal" attitude of those who continue to "announce beautiful things" without realizing them. It is not a good viaticum. Even if Conte chooses to keep low tones in commenting on the demonstration of the center-right on 2 June, without masks and distances: "Just demonstrate, but need caution".
