A great leap back. The film industry in the United States is preparing for a dark year. The coronavirus crisis that led to the closure of theaters will considerably reduce box office revenues. These could fall by half (-52%), going from 11.4 billion in 2019 to 5.5 billion, according to a note from the analyst firm MoffettNathanson. We have to go back a quarter of a century, to the year 1996, to find an equivalent level (5.65 billion dollars).

Bad news: this scenario is not the most alarmist. In their note, experts on Wall Street indicate that the situation will become even more critical if the cinemas do not reopen in July or if the blockbusters expected this month, like Disney's Mulan or Tenet , the latest film by Christopher Nolan produced by Warner Bros., decide to delay their release.
