A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.4 was triggered Thursday in the east of Indonesia off the archipelago of the Moluccas, announced the American observatory USGS, but no significant damage was reported immediately.
The observatory did not issue a tsunami alert after the earthquake whose epicenter was detected some 135 km north of the city of Tobelo at a depth of 106 km.
The shallowest earthquakes are the ones that generally do the most damage.
The Ring of Fire
The tremor was felt in several localities of the Moluccas, according to the Indonesian geophysical agency which did not report any material damage or injuries to the immediate.
Indonesia, an archipelago of 17,000 islands and islets, is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of strong seismic activity.
In September 2019, an earthquake of magnitude 6.5 shook the Moluccas archipelago and left twenty people dead. In 2018, a violent earthquake of magnitude 7.5 followed by a tsunami on the island of Celebes devastated the region of Palu and left more than 4,300 dead and missing.
