The feature film, tentatively titled All Night Long, will incorporate the greatest hits of the soul artist, several sources told the American media. The film should look like the musical Mamma Mia! , which is inspired by the songs of the Swedish group ABBA, they said. "Great things to come," said the singer in a tweet published Tuesday evening.
The writing work was entrusted to the scriptwriter Pete Chiarelli ( Crazy Rich Asians, La proposition ) after Lionel Richie himself proposed the idea of film to the firm with big ears in January.
The announcement of this project comes at a particularly prosperous period for musical films. Two years after the coronation of Damien Chazelle at the Oscar with La la land in 2017, it was Rami Malek's turn to triumph for his performance of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody , the biopic on Queen. Last year, Taron Egerton also seduced the crowds by playing Elton John ( Rocketman ), a role for which he received a Golden Globe. In addition to their critical recognition, these films have been three big boxes in recent years at the box office, bringing in several hundred million dollars each.
Lionel Richie, who turns 71 next week, has a collection of four Grammy Awards and has sold more than 100 million records worldwide. It was named three times to the Oscars in the category of best original song, winning the trophy in 1986 with the song Say You, Say Me in the film by Taylor Hackford Soleil de nuit .
