Those who report insurance damage usually submit invoices for the damaged or stolen items. However, the supporting documents are not always available. What to do?
Hamburg.
But what if you no longer have proof of purchase? How can you prove to the insurance company that you have owned the damaged item?
In such a case, you can try to contact the seller and have a replacement receipt issued, explains Kim Paulsen from the Federation of Insured Persons in Hamburg. If payment was made by card, an account statement could possibly also serve as proof. This also applies to photos.
"In general, it is advisable to document your household items," explains Paulsen. "Because in the event of a claim, people often no longer remember everything that has been stolen or damaged." Testimonies could also be helpful in case of doubt. It is decided in each individual case whether the insurance will ultimately compensate for the damage. "The damage pattern must fit".
If there are any discrepancies, the insured should first contact the insurance company. "Try to start a conversation and clarify the matter," advises Paulsen. If this does not help, consumers could contact the insurance ombudsman. This could mediate in disputes.
