Kassel - Currently the temperatures are rising again and the sun is coming out. For many this is a reason to enjoy the warm summer weather outside. Fittingly, Öko-Test tested sunscreen for children and babies.

Sensitive children's skin needs a special sunscreen . Thanks to their test, Öko-Test can recommend over half of the products - two were even rated as “very good”. There is criticism for sunscreen for children with hormonally effective UV filters.

Sunscreen for children in the test - high sun protection factor important

Dermatologists recommend a high sun protection factor for children during intense hours of sunshine outdoors on bare skin . Your skin is particularly thin and excessive UV exposure or sunbands increase the risk of skin cancer.

In total, Öko-Test examined 21 sun creams for babies and children with a sun protection factor of 50 or 50+. These have been specially developed for sensitive children's skin and are labeled as "sensitive" or "fragrance-free".

Sunscreen for children in the eco test: contains dangerous UV filters

However, use eight manufacturers of sunscreen for children UV filter in their products that do not belong to the sensitive skin of children. These are the substances octocrylene and homosalate.

They can enter the bloodstream and are suspected of disrupting the hormonal system. Even the EU is now reassessing these substances. These creams for children fail Öko-Test :

  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios Dermo-Pediatrics 50+ Lotion
  • Garnier Ambre Solaire Kids Sensitive Expert + SPF 50+ from L'Oreal

In the test: Liquid plastic in sunscreen for children pollutes the environment

The test revealed that around three quarters of sunscreen for children contain plastic compounds such as silicon or acrylates. By bathing in the sea or lake, the polymers get into the environment via the water. It is difficult to dismantle there.

This result is surprising: Although their protection is based on mineral UV filters, none of the certified natural cosmetic creams for children scored “very good”. Editor Heike Baier from Öko-Test also explains that sunscreen with mineral UV filters are, according to the current state of knowledge, the better choice. However, it is best if the children avoid the midday sun completely.

Sunscreen in the test: that counts when it comes to UV protection for children

The consumer magazine Öko-Test states that three to five teaspoons of sunscreen are required so that children have adequate sun protection. In addition, you should apply cream regularly after bathing, even with waterproof cream.

In addition, a sun protection factor of at least 30 is recommended. A maximum of 60 percent of the specified protection time should be exhausted, after which the rule applies: Get out of the sun.

More products in the eco test

Öko-Test has examined various mineral waters. Some brands fail. Among others also Apollinaris Medium. Gerolsteiner convinces.

Just in time for the strawberry season, Öko-Test took a close look at jam. A popular branded jam even contains pesticides and a bad grade.
