Great maneuvers for releases in US cinemas that will certainly have consequences also on the international market, where it is hoped that the new blockbusters will bring a large part of the audience back to theaters. Christopher Nolan's 200 million dollar dystopian thriller Warner's Tenet, the film he is aiming for for the first big summer hits, is being moved from July 17 to 31. The major also postpones another of the most anticipated titles, Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 1984 with Gal Gadot going from August 14 to October 2. Other big titles that were out in 2020 are reprogrammed for 2021. Hollywood apparently, between Covid -19 and protests, is betting on long times for the recovery.
There remains the unknown factor of Disney, which has its highly anticipated live action version of Mulan by Niki Caro coming out on July 24th. For now it has not been 'relocated': although some commentators speculate that the film could debut directly on Disney +. A road already followed for Kenneth Branagh's Artemis Fowl, which debuted on the platform on June 12; for Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical Hamilton (debut on July 3) and just announced for the family movie, mix of Cgi animation and live action, The One and only Ivan by Thea Sharrock with Sam Rockwell, Angelina Jolie and Danny DeVito as voices for the protagonist animals, arriving on August 21st.
Nolan and Warner Bros seem still intent on making Tenet a summer super hit, and to show confidence in the operation, the return of the other dystopian cornerstone of the English director, Inception 10 years after debut. They are repositioned to 2021 instead of Godzilla vs. Kong by Adam Wingard and Tom & Jerry of Tim Story. It has been removed from the 2020 release list and not yet reprogrammed Robert Zemeckis' The Witches with Anne Hathaway and Octavia Spencer, while Lana Wachowski's Matrix 4, which was due to arrive in May 2021, slides in April 2022. Universal postpones to 2021 since the beginning of October 2020, Miguel Sapochnik's science fiction Bios, with Tom Hanks.
