A worker cannot be fired because he is gay or transgender: the United States Supreme Court has ruled that federal law must protect against any discrimination at work.

The decision was made by a majority, 6 to 3, with President of the Court John Roberts and conservative judge Neil Gorsuch who voted with the democratically appointed judges. The ruling states that Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act protects not only from discrimination based on race or religion but also from discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Therefore, it also protects the LGBT workers. It is therefore recognized that where the law speaks of 'sex', it does not refer only to the potential discrimination of women.
