Requirements, such as at wartime, even if this time the war is against Covid-19: it happened to some hotels in Delhi that, up to three months ago, before the Corona virus made them desert, were among the places more exclusive than the capital. Five five-star hotels had to bow to an order from Governor Kejriwal and transform, willy-nilly, into "detached pavilions" of as many private hospitals, which will manage the organizational and health aspects, to treat Covid patients with mild symptoms or however, not serious.
They range from the central Taj Mansingh, the iconic skyscraper in the heart of Delhi, very close to the Embassy district, to the Surya, a favorite destination of Italian tour operators, to the Sheraton, to the Crowne Plaza: hotels famous for their sparkling environments, gardens and swimming pools accessible only to guests, restaurants with international menus and party rooms always full-booked, months in advance. All under renovation. A single detail does not change: the economic availability of the guests, admitted only if with solid bank accounts: the rooms will in fact cost at least 130 euros per day, for hospitalization and minimal medical assistance.
The ownership of the Surya appealed to the Delhi High Court, highlighting serious logistical problems, from the hygiene of the furnishings, to the air conditioning, from the cleaning to the treatment of waste, to the design of the bathrooms. The Tata group, owner of the Taj Mansingh, objected that there was work in progress at the hotel, which had already started during the lockdown. All in vain: the court confirmed Kejriwal who, after requisitioning the hotels, is transforming dozens of banquet halls into quarantine reception spaces. A photo of three days ago shows him, in a meeting, in the Surya hall: no trolleys or suitcases, only masks, waiting for the comings and goings of nurses, doctors, thermometers and oxygen cylinders to begin in the one hundred and twenty rooms.
