(ANSA) - TEL AVIV, JUNE 21 - ZeevSternhell, one of the world's foremost experts on fascism, an Israeli left-wing figure and the Israel Prize for Political Science in 2008, died at the age of 85. The Haaretz newspaper reported about it for a long time Sternhell was a major signature.
Born in Poland in 1935, he was the only survivor of the Shoah of his family destroyed by the Nazis. Emigrated in 1951 to 16 years in Israel, Sternhell served as commander in the 1st Golani Infantry Brigade and fought in the Six Day War, in Kippur and in Lebanon.
Graduated in History and Political Sciences at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he also studied at the Institut d'étudespolitiques in Paris with a thesis dedicated to the nationalist Maurice Barres. His works - many of which translated into Italian, from 'Birth of the fascist ideology' to 'Neither right nor left' to 'Birth of Israel' - have had a strong impact on traditional interpretations of anti-democratic anti-liberal ideologies. A staunch critic of the right in Israel, he has warned several times about the possibility of a collapse of the academocracy in the country. (HANDLE).
