Microsoft intended to compete with Twitch, a very popular video game streaming platform owned by Amazon, with its own Mixer service. Three years after its launch, the American giant recognizes its defeat: Mixer will close its doors on July 22. Microsoft, however, had spared no effort. Last year, he had multiplied the checks so that stars of video game streaming operate exclusively on Mixer, and leave Twitch. The American Tyler Blevins, better known under the name of Ninja and famous for his videos of Fortnite , was thus passed on Mixer in August 2019 for 30 million dollars. But the strategy did not pay off: in one year, the number of hours spent on the platform remained sluggish, while those on Twitch, five times greater, jumped 100%.

This failure turns into an opportunity, however, for Microsoft, which has decided to join forces with Facebook. The Mixer site will now link to the Facebook Gaming platform, which offers a similar service.
