Fessenheim shutdown: nuclear preserves the environment, says Bruno Le Maire

An affirmation that should speak. The day after the shutdown of the Fessenheim nuclear power plant in Alsace, Bruno Le Maire confirmed that France would continue to invest in nuclear energy. Presenting himself as a "nuclear defender", he also cited two advantages for this energy: "It allows us to be one of the countries that emits less CO2 for its electricity production and this guarantees us our independence, "he said. And to continue: "If we think about the long term, nuclear keeps all its relevance".

"A strategic asset"

"By dint of criticizing the nuclear industry, you lose skills," said Le Maire. "I don't mind being told that we have to reindustrialize the country [...], but we must not weaken our strategic assets, including nuclear," he warned.

The second reactor at Fessenheim, the oldest nuclear power plant in France, was disconnected from the national power grid Monday evening at 11 p.m.
