A new set of 88 original works by the painter Sonia Delaunay, illustrating the evolution of her pictorial work from the 1920s to the 1970s, was put up for auction on Wednesday in Paris by the auction house Cornette de Saint Cyr.

These gouaches and drawings, in small format, estimated between 400 and 3,000 euros, form the second part of the succession of the publisher of art books Jacques Damase. The first had a great success in June 2019 (more than 330,000 euros). Jacques Damase is known for having “staged the printed pages” of many modern artists including Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst and even Georges Braque.

Very quickly when he got to know Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979), Damase spotted his work, allowing the artist of Ukrainian origin to be propelled to the front of the scene of modern art. Sonia and Robert Delaunay will create this essential art form known as orphism, which renders in colorful forms the colored phenomena perceived in nature. Fashion sketches and projects for fabrics, greeting cards and gouaches used for poster projects, illustrations and covers for art books, notably his ABC book made in the 1970s, are presented at the sale. ceramics, jewelry or card games reflecting his commitment to an art accessible to all.

In the second phase, a private Parisian collection will be dispersed during the sale, including drawings by Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard, a nude by Matisse, a precious ceramic by Joan Miro.
