Two weeks ago, there were only a handful. This Friday, more than 800 American and European advertisers are participating in the boycott of Facebook and Instagram launched by the civic movement #StopHateForProfit. Created by American anti-racist associations, the collective Sleeping Giants, and supported by Meghan Markle and her husband Prince Harry, this call aims to strike Facebook into the wallet so that it acts more against hate speech on its platform, including those emitted by political figures. The movement has snowballed, with a sharp acceleration in recent days in the number of companies that have decided to suspend their advertising investments for a month or more. Among them: Unilever, Coca-Cola, PlayStation, Volkswagen, Adidas, Verizon or Starbucks.

Facebook was initially imperturbable. "I think these advertisers will soon return to our platforms," Mark Zuckerberg told his staff on June 26, according to The Information.
