(ANSA) - TOKYO, JUL 05 - The death toll of the extreme bad weather that hit the south-western Japan rises to 18 dead, with 16 corpses waiting to be identified and 14 missing. This was reported by the governmental authorities, after the torrential rains that caused the flooding of large areas of the prefecture of Kumamoto, with two flooded rivers in 11 different locations.
The authorities of the town of Hitoyoshi have confirmed the death of 9 people today, while another 50 people are blocked inside a nursing home inside the flooded Kuma village, reports the public broadcaster NHK.
The Self-Defense Forces are battling time to move residents to nearby hospitals.
There are at least 30 districts of the prefecture whose access points have been completely isolated from floods and landslides.
Evacuation orders currently concern 203,000 residents between the prefectures of Kumamoto and Kagoshima, with the installation of 100 collection centers made available by the government.
Nearly 6,000 homes in the region suffered electricity cuts. For the next few hours, until Monday morning, the National Meteorological Agency (JMA) is forecasting rainfall of up to 200mm in southern Kyushu, and 150mm in the Tokai region, along the Pacific Ocean coast. (HANDLE).
