In 2020, online purchases of Italian consumers will reach 22.7 billion euros (+ 26%), marking the highest growth ever, equal to 4.7 billion more in a year. This is what emerges from the B2c e-commerce Observatory promoted by the School of Management of the Milan Polytechnic and by Netcomm, the Italian Electronic Commerce Consortium.
The lockdown effect, "when e-commerce was the main engine for generating consumption", pushes emerging sectors that will grow above the average. Food & grocery will reach 2.5 billion euros (+ 56%), followed by furnishings and home living at 2.3 billion (+ 30%), but the more mature sectors such as IT and consumer electronics will also grow (6 billion, + 18%), clothing (3.9 billion, + 21%) and publishing (1.2 billion, + 16%). This year the incidence of e-commerce on total retail sales will go from 6% to 8%, showing that "online commerce is increasingly important in Italy - observes the study - despite continuing to represent a small part of total purchases. " In particular, purchases from smartphones come to represent 56% of total online purchases, reaching € 12.8 billion (+ 42% per year).
