(ANSA) - ROME, JULY 08 - About 1.2 million people have died in India in the last 20 years due to weeding bites: this is what emerges from a study published in the eLife magazine carried out by Indian and international experts.
According to the BBC, about half of the victims were between 30 and 69 years of age and a quarter were children. Among the deadliest snakes, experts identified Russell's so-called vipers, bungari and cobras, which caused the vast majority of deaths while the remainder was attributed to at least 12 other species of snakes.
The study also highlighted that between 2001 and 2014 approximately 70% of the deaths occurred in eight states: Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh (including the new state of Telangana) Rajasthan and Gujarat.
On average, in India the odds of dying from a snake's bite before turning 70 are one in 250, but in some areas of the country they are close to one in 100. (ANSA).
