(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 13 - Defying the suffocating heat and the danger of contagion from Covid-19, hundreds of thousands of Hong Kong citizens have lined up at the polling stations over the weekend to participate in the primary to select candidates for the democratic opposition to the Local council for the elections scheduled for September. The CNN reports it online.
Voting took place ten days after the approval by the People's Republic of a new security law for the former British colony.
According to the organizers, approximately 600,000 people attended the primary, well beyond the initial expectations of about 170,000. "The people of Hong Kong have shown the world, and also to the authorities, that we do not intend to abandon the struggle for democracy," said Benny Tai, one of the organizers.
