(HANDLE)(ANSA) - ROME, JULY 13 - UNESCO has decided to create 15 new geoparks in the world, for the first time in Nicaragua, the Russian Federation and Serbia. The other countries that host the new parks are: Canada, China, Spain, Finland, Indonesia, Portugal, Korea, Great Britain and Vietnam. A special geological value is recognized in these geographical areas. In geoparks, whose primary objective is the protection of geodiversity, conservation is combined with sustainable development and involves local communities with the aim of creating collaboration and exchanging experiences.
In addition, geoparks are considered laboratories in which it promotes the management of the Earth's heritage and the sustainability of local communities with a holistic approach.
The network of global geoparks is protected by UNESCO together with World Heritage Sites and the reserves of the atmosphere.
Italy has 9 UNESCO World Geoparks which are: Rocca di Cerere; Madonie; Adamello Brenta; Cilento Vallo diDiano; Tuscan mining park; Apuan Alps; Sesia-Val Grande; Pollino. (HANDLE).
