PALERMO - On the occasion of the centenary of the purchase of the Castello dei Ventimiglia by the citizens of Castelbuono, the local Civic Museum presents the exhibition La Stanza delle Meraviglie, an exhibition of hundreds of objects loaned by the castelbuonesi and collected in a precious setting made like the eighteenth century wunderkammer.
The exhibition, which will be inaugurated on July 30th (18.00) and can be visited until March 28th, is part of the 1920 Auction project, curated by Maria Rosa Sossai, in collaboration with Angelo Cucco and with the participation of citizens of Castelbuono, already involved for a year in a process of reappropriation of collective memory and the value of sharing. On display more than 200 objects loaned by individual citizens, associations, schools, brotherhoods, all actively involved in the project that makes an entire community protagonist.
Following the suggestion of the Wunderkammers who in the 17th and 18th centuries kept collections of unique, eccentric and precious objects, La Stanza delle Meraviglie intends to celebrate the value of a common good, through the acquisition of the Castello dei Ventimiglia with a public collection, after that in 1920 the Castle had been put up for sale at a judicial auction.
This event of extraordinary historical and cultural value with which the castelbuonesi decided to deliver part of their goods in order to collect the sufficient amount for the purchase, can be counted as the first example of public good in Sicily.
The Room of Wonders displays the objects that the castelbuonesi generously loaned to the museum, symbols of identity and belonging. The objects are among the most varied and almost all date back to the first half of the 1900s: furnishings of various kinds, such as work tools, clothes, hoods, dresses of the confraternities, shoes, documents, jewelry, bags, jewelry, photos, signs and other materials that represent the history of a community of citizens that has shared the same identity value for a century.
The Wonder Room is the heart of the 1920 Auction project, which started in 2019 with a series of city assemblies open to all and meetings with schools, during which the initiatives to be organized to celebrate the centenary were discussed together. For the occasion, the Fiasconaro company in Castelbuono has created a tribute created with its confectionery products, dedicated to the Ventimiglia castle and exhibited in the museum. (HANDLE).
