The Rome Court of Appeal reduced the sentence for the authors of the injury of the swimmer Manuel Bortuzzo in Rome in February 2019 to 14 years and 8 months in prison. At first instance Lorenzo Marinelli and Daniel Bazzano were sentenced to 16 years. The judges dropped the charge of attempted murder against Bortuzzo's girlfriend, Martina Rossi. The athlete, caught by a blow from the post in the back, was paralyzed in the legs.
The incident occurred on the night of February 2 to 3 last year. The two are accused of attempted double premeditated murder and port, possession and receiving of firearms.
The two had been tried in an abbreviated rite in October last year. "I heard Manuel and his family who accepted the judges' decision serenely, without any controversy. For my part, it is a sentence that I respect but which I do not agree with, and I look forward to reading the reasons. We must understand why the accusation of attempt has fallen murder against Manuel's fiancée, "said lawyer Massimo Ciardullo, attorney for the injured swimmer in February last year, commenting on the decision of the judges of the Court of Appeal of Rome.
