The tlayuda, a typical dish originating from Oaxaca, has been crowned this Thursday as the best food in Latin America, according to a survey carried out by Netflix Latin America on Twitter. As part of the Street Food: Latin America premiere on the streaming platform , the company launched a dynamic where users could vote for their favorite Latin American street food.
This is the final of the Street Food Latin America Championship! A lot of passion, a lot of pride, a lot of Latin flavor. Lets vote! 🏆 pic.twitter.com/tijEiom51d
- Netflix Latin America (@NetflixLAT) July 22, 2020The competition started with six contestants: the choripán (Buenos Aires, Argentina), the acarajé (Salvador, Brazil), the ajiaco (Bogotá, Colombia), the ceviche (Lima, Peru), the tlayuda (Oaxaca, Mexico) and the filling potato (La Paz, Bolivia). The final battle was brought to an end between the Argentine, Peruvian and Mexican dishes. The Oaxacan tlayuda is a corn tortilla of about 30 cm in diameter or more, which is made with white corn dough. To this base you can add cheese, refried beans, beef jerky, beef jerky or chorizo.
The time has come, a 3-time final.
Who will win the Street Food Latin America Championship?
Twitter users had 24 hours to vote for their favorite street food. The competition was very close. Just a couple of hours before the voting closed, the tlayuda rallied, being the winner in the end.
The Twitter account of the Government of Mexico, the National Soccer Team and characters such as the United States Ambassador to the country, asked their followers to vote for this dish.
There is only one hour left.

- Guillermo Ochoa (@ yosoy8a) July 23, 2020Chef and culinary historian Rodrigo Llanes tells Verne that this dish is a bridge between pre-Hispanic America and Europe. "The ancient, dry tortilla, covered in beans, meat, seating [the fat that accumulates in a saucepan when cooking meat] and vegetables is magical: it looks like pizza, toast, quesadilla and giant taco," says the chef. However, it was a very close contest. "I do not disqualify the other candidates, but I maintain my preference for the Oaxacan, for its historical tradition that does justice to the native peoples, for its flavor that is the emblem of the mestizo sweet tooth, and for its size, which gives to share it as the best of two worlds, "he says. The chef highlights that in addition to cheese and meat, it can also be accompanied by other types of protein such as chapulines.
