Grasping the essence of Chanel: this was the spirit of the Métiers d'Art collection that paid tribute to the historic seat of Gabrielle Coco Chanel on rue Cambon in Paris. For the campaign, the creative director of the maison Virginie Viard invited the American director Sofia Coppola, who had also collaborated in the decoration of the fashion show last December at the Grand Palais. On that occasion Mademoiselle Chanel's apartment, the high fashion salons and the famous mirrored staircase of the atelier had been reconstituted, where legend says that Coco watched the parades sitting on the fifth step.
The same staircase now forms the background to the campaign photographed by Melodie McDaniel under the direction of Sofia Coppola. Models Mona Tougaard, Gigi Hadid, Vittoria Ceretti, Rebecca Leigh Longendyke, Anna Ewers, Ola Rudnicka, Pan Haowen and Blesnya Minher embark on a celebratory journey that leads from the legendary address of Gabrielle Chanel to a place frequented by Karl Lagerfeld and his friends, the restaurant and dance of La Coupole in Paris. "We thought about the original shows that took place at 31 rue Cambon, and how beautiful it must have been to see the models walking so close, and the setting of Coco's mirror staircase, which always gives me a thrill," he explains Sofia Coppola.
Mirrors with cubist facets which reflect the silhouettes of the collection which is in the colors loved by Chanel: white on a long fluid dress and an ensemble of satin crêpe; black on a jersey jacket embroidered with multicolor rhinestones and a wool and cashmere tweed coat. But also gold, on a quilted bronze coat, a dress with delicate lace ensemble wrapped in flowers. The embroidery of the House of Lesage, whether it is an ear of corn, ribbons or pearls, punctuates different garments. The two-tone, a Chanel code, is expressed by a graphic suit in black and white tweed. The Lemarié feather and flower decorator makes a black lace dress sublime, an ecru skirt embellished with double Cs and a white silk organza cloak printed with camellias, a flower dear to Gabrielle that completely covers the evening bomber jackets.
