In the space of a day, 57,000 new cases of Covid-19 and 679 additional deaths were recorded on American soil, according to the count from Johns-Hopkins University. This daily report is slightly lower than those recorded in recent days.
Infections every 24 hours topped 60,000 for twelve consecutive days until last Sunday. During this dozen, 70,000 contaminations were identified over three days. And by the end of last week, the death toll had exceeded the 1,000 death mark for four days in a row. It hadn't happened since the end of May.
Note that this slight drop recorded on Sunday and Monday could be due to the feedback from local health authorities, slowed down at weekends. After improving in late spring, the United States has seen the epidemic start to rise again for several weeks, especially in the south and west of the country.
The United States remains by far the most bereaved country in the world (146,968 deaths). Brazil comes in second (87,004), followed by the United Kingdom (45,752), then Mexico (43,680) and Italy (35,112), according to the latest report on Monday evening.
A contaminated member of the Trump administration
The US administration has announced the contamination of national security adviser Robert O'Brien, one of the men most often in contact with the president. It is the first time that such a prominent member of the Trump administration has been affected by the coronavirus.
While restrictions are multiplying in the face of an upsurge in cases around the world, Donald Trump again asserted himself last Thursday in favor of the reopening of schools.
