(ANSA) - KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 28 - Former Malaysian leader Najib Razak was found guilty today of all charges brought against him in his first trial for the multibillion dollar scandal of the Malaysian sovereign wealth fund 1MDB.
"In conclusion, after evaluating all the evidence in this process, I believe the prosecution has successfully demonstrated the case," said Judge Mohamad Nazlan Mohamad Ghazal at the Kuala Lumpur High Court. The former prime minister faces decades of jail time.
In July 2018, Razak - who was defeated at the May election of that year - was indicted on charges of abuse of trust in the investigation into embezzlement and money laundering related to the fund, from which 4 disappeared, $ 5 billion since 2009.
Each of the indictments has a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The former prime minister has never denied having received $ 700 million in bank accounts held by him from entities controlled by the fund, pointing his finger at an alleged "political sabotage" and insisting that he never used government funds for personal purposes.
