Cinema releases on August 5: “Les Blagues de Toto”, “Just Kids”… our favorites

2020-08-04T14:19:42.189Z

Like every week, here are the favorite films of the editorial staff among the new releases on display this Wednesday.

This week is marked by the broadcast, for the first time in a long time, of an American “blockbuster”, “Greenland”, a disaster film. But there are also more intimate comedies and films on the bill ...

WE LOVE A LOT

"The Jokes of Toto"

At school, Toto loves to make his kind mistress, Madame Jolibois, go crazy. At home, it is his parents, divorced, that he makes goats. One day, they decide to send him to boarding school for something stupid that Toto did not do. To escape this sanction, Toto will seek the culprit ... Visual gags and replicas that kill: the "jokes" follow one another with formidable efficiency in this spirited and well-written comedy. The plot is spiced up by Toto's investigation, with the option of burglary and flashlight, which gives it a funny suspense. In addition to tasty supporting roles (Ramzy Bedia as a megalomaniac boss and Daniel Prévost as a prankster grandpa), we appreciate the tender morality: despite all of Toto's jokes, his parents would not want to change him for the world.

EDITOR'S RATING: 4/5

“Les Blagues de Toto” , French comedy by Pascal Bourdiaux with Gavril Dartevelle, Guillaume De Tonquédec, Anne Marivin… 1h24. From 6 years old.

"Bigfoot Family"

Hairy creature at the crossroads of monkey and man, Bigfoot returns three years after the success of “Bigfoot Junior”. In "Bigfoot Family", Bigfoot, now a star, is asked by environmental activists to prevent an oil company from drilling in an Alaskan natural park. He then decides to take advantage of his notoriety to defend this cause. But once in the Far North, he disappears. His son Adam therefore goes in search of him with his mother, their raccoon and their pet bear ... In this funny film, punctuated by action scenes and with attractive graphics (Editor's note: the landscapes of Alaska are superb) , it is about greedy industrialists who lie about supposedly “green” technology, and using social media to generate “popular pressure”. A smart and green cartoon.

EDITOR'S RATING: 4/5

“Bigfoot Family” , Belgian animated film by Ben Stassen and Jérémie Degruson. 1h32.

"Just Kids"

Already motherless, Jack, 19, Lisa, 17, and Mathis, 10, suddenly lose their father. While Lisa moves to the South with her boyfriend, Jack becomes Mathis's tutor. The two boys stay in their apartment in Grenoble, then Jack takes his younger brother on a trip to Spain and settles with him in a mobile home near the beach. The eldest refuses to feel sorry for himself, wants to have fun, but the death of his father obsesses him ... With great accuracy and tenderness, "Just Kids" features a preteen and a young man brutally propelled in the adult world. Formidably interpreted by Kacey Mottet Klein, revealed by André Téchiné (“Quand on a 17 ans”), this film speaks of mourning, emancipation and brotherly love through a scenario full of energy, which bathes in sunny atmospheres and magnificent lights.

EDITOR'S RATING: 4/5

"Just Kids" , Franco-Swiss drama by Christophe Blanc, with Kacey Mottet Klein, Andrea Maggiulli, Anamaria Vartolomei… 1h43.

"The Champion's Challenge"

AS Roma star Christian, a gifted - and overpaid - football kid, is a fashionable man in Italy. But it goes to his head, which has repercussions both in his private life and in the field. The president of his club puts him in front of an ultimatum: he obtains his baccalaureate, or he is fired. To help him and reframe him, he orders him to revise with Valerio, a brilliant teacher but downcast since the death of his son ... Pulsive in his first quarter of an hour, "The Challenge of the champion" takes off from the meeting between Christian and Valerio. Because all that makes its salt is this relationship between a talented young man, who has a good background but who got lost on the way, with a very intelligent, patient, modest type, but, him, undermined by a drama staff. A two-tape game that owes a lot to the complicity of its main actors, Andrea Carpenzano and Stefano Accorsi.

EDITOR'S RATING: 3, 5/5

“The Champion's Challenge ”, by Leonardo D'Agostini, with Stefano Accorsi, Andrea Carpenzano… 1h45.

"The Nurse"

A home nurse, Ichiko takes care of an elderly lady and gives evening classes to the two granddaughters of the family. One day, the youngest mysteriously disappears. When she is finally found after a few days, Ichiko is suspected of having been an accomplice in the kidnapping. A trap closes on her… but Ichiko will in turn trap those she considers responsible for her suffering. Between drama and thriller, also flirting with social criticism, "The Nurse" brilliantly stages intriguing characters. The subtle (double) game of the actress who plays Ichiko, a caring nurse, but also - maybe? - Machiavellian manipulator - keeps us going from start to finish. A dark and disturbing film.

EDITOR'S RATING: 3.5 / 5

“The Nurse” , Japanese drama by Kôji Fukada, with Mariko Tsutsui, Mikako Ichikawa, Sosuke Ikematsu… 1h44.

"White Riot"

At the end of the 1970s, in London, a handful of music fans, worried about the rise of racism and the growing success of the far-right National Front party, decided to organize concerts with punk artists and bands. reggae, called Rock Againt Racism (RAR). The most famous of them took place in April 1978 in a small park in east London, and brought together big names like the Clash, Tom Robinson Band, X-Ray Spex or Steel Pulse. While a few fans are expected, 80,000 people disembark and transform the concert into a festive carnival… It is to the genesis and preparation of the RAR that the documentary “White Riot” is devoted, with archive images and witnesses of the time, which all underline to what extent the demands of the time remain very relevant today. Musically interesting, this document, which perhaps would have had more its place for a television broadcast, proves to be fascinating when it tackles the political and social context of these explosive and tormented years.

“White Riot” , British documentary by Rubika Shah. 1h20.

"Eva in August"

Eva is 33 years old and decides to spend August in Madrid, where she has been loaned an apartment. In the summer heat, this Madrilenian plays tourists, goes out to popular parties in the evening, meets old acquaintances and lets herself be surprised by her encounters. We know almost nothing about Eva - even if we learn over the course of the film that she had a recent break-up and that the question of motherhood inhabits her - and in the end not much happens during her “ vacation ". However, we happily follow this free and somewhat melancholy young woman in the working-class districts of Madrid, we are interested in her anecdotal and deep discussions, and we let ourselves be hypnotized by her Madonna face, bathed in glowing lights. Under the Madrid torpor, only the present moment counts. And for the viewer, this (suspended) moment with Eva is a charming and sunny parenthesis.

EDITOR'S RATING: 3.5 / 5

“Eva in August” , Spanish film by Jonás Trueba, with Itsaso Arana, Vito Sanz, Isabelle Stoffel… 2h09.

"Greenland"

A talented architect, John is at the home of his ex-wife and his little boy when he receives an alert from the United States government: he must join a shelter reserved for a handful of lucky people, while the Earth will be hit by the debris of a comet… The first big Hollywood production projected on our screens since the health crisis, “Greenland” plays its role of escape film perfectly, even if it takes place in an end-of-the-world atmosphere . Accustomed to action films, Gerard Butler inherits here a role not only based on his musculature, playing the divorced family man ready to do anything to save his ex-wife and his child. Great entertaining spectacle, supported by effective special effects.

EDITOR'S RATING: 3/5

“Greenland” , American film by Ric Roman Waugh, with Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, Scott Glenn, King Bach… 1h40.
