Road safety: 40 million motorists demand "a traffic police"

After several accidents involving drivers, the general delegate of the 40 Millions d'Automobilistes association, Pierre Chasseray, app

A father killed by a driver on the run near Lens (Pas-de-Calais) on the night of Monday to Tuesday, August 4. A five-year-old girl died after being run over on a pedestrian crossing in Aubervilliers (Seine-Saint-Denis), on July 20, by a drunk driver without a license… Since the end of confinement, Road Safety has noted an increase in “Risky behavior” while driving. In an interview with Le Parisien - Today in France, the interministerial delegate Marie Gautier-Melleray revealed at the end of July this worrying figure: "If we compare the month of June and the first fortnight of July 2020 to the same period of the year last, there is a 14% increase in very heavy speeding. On Saturday August 1, a young driver of 19, tested positive for cannabis and while on probation, was arrested at 233 km / h near Beaune (Côte-d'Or). In Mayenne, on August 2, a driver was checked at 145 km / h instead of 80 km / h. And the same day, in the Sarthe, another was traveling at 111 km / h instead of… 50 km / h.

"We can no longer tolerate a minority of drivers adopting the behavior of mad people at the wheel", indignant Pierre Chasseray, the general delegate of the association 40 Millions of motorists, who had recently campaigned, among others, for the abandonment of 80km / h. Judging that the radars are "not effective", he calls for more police on the road in order to strengthen controls. For him, “the lack of probability of being checked has led to an inadmissible behavioral drift on the part of a minority of drivers”.

Since the spring, Highway Safety has noted an increase in very serious speeding violations. Is there a general slack on the road?

PIERRE CHASSERAY. Within our association, we are currently receiving a lot of letters from motorists evoking certain unacceptable behaviors, mixing alcohol, speed, cannabis. They tell me about drivers crossing villages at 110 km / h. A lawyer specializing in road law told me about a case where the motorist was traveling at more than 200 km / h on the secondary network because he wanted to "clean up his engine" after confinement. We have often tended to associate these risky behaviors with young drivers, but today, it is sometimes the four-wheelers and fifties who are behind the wheel. Today, it must be said: our children are no longer safe when they go cycling or crossing the road. And the local elected officials have no solution, apart from installing a speed bump or a chicane in a street, which is not a panacea.

Should we strengthen the sanctions against drivers?

It is not a question of strengthening sanctions, but rather of strengthening controls. The lack of probability of being stopped has led to an inadmissible behavioral drift on the part of a minority of drivers who consider themselves to be allowed anything. The question is: how to sanction the 15% of irresponsible without penalizing the 85% of those who play by the rules. So far, the only response from the authorities has been to generalize automatic speed cameras. But, outside of the known areas where they are installed, the drivers feel untouchable, because the police are no longer along the roads. The proof that speed cameras are not effective is that there are more and more of them and that deviant behavior is still on the rise.

What solution do you recommend?

We need more blue along the main roads by creating a traffic police. We have been caricatured a lot in association with anti-radar and anti-speed limit. But today, let's be clear: I call on motorists to be extremely careful when traveling on vacation. When you pass through a village, respect the speed and think that the child crossing the road could be yours. We can no longer tolerate a minority of drivers adopting the behavior of berserk at the wheel.

What type of behavior worries you the most?

There are clearly not enough alcohol and narcotics checks on the road, while in almost half of the fatal crashes, alcohol abuse and drug use played a role. We must react. If people had the virtual certainty of being checked while driving, this would obviously encourage them to stop drinking before driving. But today I want to say it loud and clear: to be drunk at the wheel and to drive openly is suicide, and if you kill someone, it is called murder.
