The flames continue to ravage Martigues (Bouches-du-Rhône) and its surroundings. Wednesday afternoon, after a short lull, the fires resumed, temporarily interrupting traffic on the A55 motorway.
In two days, at least 2,700 people were evacuated to escape the multiple fires. Some have found refuge in one of the eight gymnasiums requisitioned to accommodate residents and vacationers. 1,500 ha of vegetation burned, causing extensive material damage. In the fight against the flames, fourteen firefighters were slightly injured or poisoned.
