Coronavirus in Argentina: 147 dead and another 7,513 positive cases reported in the last 24 hours

The Ministry of Health of the Nation confirmed this Thursday another 147 deaths and 7,513 new cases of coronavirus. It is the day with the most infections, breaking yesterday's record of 7,147.

Since the start of the pandemic, 4,251 fatal victims and  228,195 positive victims have been counted in the country  , of which 116,695 belong to patients who are currently studying the disease. 

In the morning part, the health portfolio had reported the death of 31 people (21 men and 10 women), of whom 21 resided in the province of Buenos Aires, four in the City of Buenos Aires, three in Tierra del Fuego, one in Neuquén , one in Tucumán and one in Chaco.

Thus, the mortality rate is 90 fatalities per million inhabitants and the case fatality rate is 1.9% of confirmed cases.

According to official information, 17,266 new samples were made on Thursday and 794,544 diagnostic tests for this disease were carried out since the outbreak began, which is equivalent to 17,509.9 samples per million inhabitants.

The positivity index, which measures the number of cases found on tests carried out, yesterday stood at 45% country average, 42% in the City and 51.7% in the province of Buenos Aires. So far, the incidence is 486 infections per 100,000 inhabitants.

From the Ministry of Health they announced that as of this Thursday the definition of a positive case was extended to those who have symptoms and are cohabitants or close contacts of people already diagnosed with Covid-19 by PCR test in areas where there is community transmission of the disease.

This was confirmed by the undersecretary of Health Strategies, Alejandro Costa, who explained that the laboratory test should continue to be performed on patients who meet the hospitalization criteria, health workers, pregnant women, people with risk factors, closed institution workers who have died without confirmed cause of death.

In this regard, the Secretary for Access to Health, Carla Vizzotti, said that this "expansion" of the modality to define a positive case of coronavirus was agreed upon by the federal council, and assured that it will allow "optimization of resources."

As of today, the areas with community transmission of the virus where this new criterion could be used are the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA) and various areas in the provinces of Chaco, La Pampa, Jujuy, Mendoza, Santa Fe, Córdoba, Santa Cruz, Neuquén, Río Negro and Tierra del Fuego.

The official also anticipated that it is expected that there will be an increase in confirmations of positive diagnoses in the coming days due to the change in modality, and maintained that each jurisdiction will be able to decide "where and when it is implemented."
