Covid-19: Norway, Finland, Ireland ... these countries where the French are not welcome

2020-08-06T19:04:20.055Z

Due to the resurgence of Covid-19 cases in France, Norway has returned France to the red zone and imposes an obligatory quarantine

In Norway, the French are now persona non grata . The country announced this Thursday to return France to the red zone due to the resurgence of cases of coronavirus. All travelers arriving from France to the Scandinavian country will be subject to a mandatory ten-day quarantine. A measure that comes into force this Thursday evening.

France is not alone. Switzerland, Monaco and the Czech Republic, as well as two Swedish regions, are also concerned. They too have experienced a prevalence of the coronavirus that has risen above 20 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the past two weeks, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release.

On July 15, Norway lifted its restrictions on travel with most European countries, including France. But Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide, quoted in the statement, said: “The infectious situation can change quickly, and so can restrictions. The ministry maintains its overall recommendation against "non-essential travel" until August 20.

Amber light for Finland, Ireland and Iceland

What are the European countries where France is subject to restrictions? To help its nationals see more clearly, the European Union has set up an Internet platform that compiles the travel restrictions imposed in each country. We have identified the countries where in-depth guidelines are in effect. Note that the rules specific to each country may change at any time depending on the evolution of the health situation.

Not far from Norway, Finland also places strict restrictions on travelers from France. “Non-essential travel and leisure travel […] are still not allowed,” said the Foreign Ministry. To go to Helsinki as a French national, you must be able to prove either a residence in the country, a family link with a resident, or a professional reason. Quarantine remains recommended for the French but is not subject to control.

In Ireland, French visitors are asked to restrict their travel for 14 days. This instruction involves staying at home, avoiding all social contact as much as possible and declaring the address where you are confined. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs specifies that "controls will be carried out to verify proper compliance with this measure". He also advises to “postpone all non-essential travel to Ireland”.

This 14-day quarantine is also required in Iceland. However, people who do not wish to carry out this quarantine "have the possibility of being tested for Covid-19 upon their arrival at Keflavík airport", notes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Children born after 2005 are not affected by these measures.

Almost green: Denmark, Greece, the Netherlands

In Denmark, travelers from France are allowed with a valid purpose or if a stay of at least six nights has been booked and can be proven. The Danish police update the orange list where France appears every Thursday.

For Greece, it is mandatory to complete an online form at least 48 hours before travel. Random screening for Covid-19 may be requested upon the arrival of travelers, "regardless of their nationality and their route of entry into Greece", specifies the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the event of a positive test, a fortnight is imposed. Moreover, the only overland route open to enter Greece is via Bulgaria. Other border posts are authorized "exceptionally" for essential travel.

In the Netherlands, all passengers over the age of 13 need only complete a health check form. The United Kingdom also requires a detailed form to be completed (identity, place of residence, on-site itinerary, etc.) less than 48 hours before departure.

The number of cases of Covid-19 in France continues to increase. The Directorate General of Health announced on Thursday that the country had identified 1,604 new coronavirus contaminations in twenty-four hours. Tuesday, the scientific council warned that France was not immune from a second wave and urged the French to respect barrier gestures.
