How useful is the mask requirement for students?

North Rhine-Westphalia requires mouth and nose protection in lessons, in other federal states this is considered disproportionate. Yet.

Teacher, pupils in Dortmund in May: "What about breathing, eating, drinking?"

Ina Fassbender / AFP

Fourteen days before the start of school, the Minister of Education presented her plans for the new school year to teachers, parents and students. Yvonne Gebauer (FDP) and her State Secretary Mathias Richter spoke of distance rules and knowledge gaps, they explained concepts for digital teaching and how to deal with teachers who belong to the risk group. The minister took four and a half hours to explain in detail to dozens of association representatives in the Düsseldorf ministry what everyday life would look like with Corona in schools.

There was no mention of a mask requirement.

The Gebauer then announced five days later at a press conference: This applies to pupils from the fifth grade. "Also for teaching on the permanent seats, in the classrooms and course rooms." There are only a few exceptions, such as when children are supposed to work on artfully lisping "th" in English class. For everyone else in the most populous federal state, the start of the school year on August 12th means: Mask on.
