(ANSA) - TOKYO, AUGUST 10 - Japan yesterday recorded 1,492 cases of coronavirus, a figure that brings the overall toll of infections to 48,702: the Ministry of Health announced. The infections drop again in Tokyo, where 197 infections have been reported in the last 24 hours compared to 331 of the previous 24.
With its 14 million inhabitants, Tokyo has the highest percentage of infections in relation to the population of all the prefectures of the country, with an average of 336 new cases per day in the last week, and the governor Yuriko Koike has not ruled out the return of the state of emergency should it be necessary while urging citizens to reduce non-essential expenditure.
Meanwhile, the health ministry has announced that it will increase test capacity to 72,000 per day by the end of September.
