The classic joke-telling was his profession - now Fips Asmussen has died at the age of 82. The native of Hamburg died in hospital on Sunday, as his life partner in Querfurt in Saxony-Anhalt told the AFP news agency.

At the beginning of his career in the 1960s, he was still doing cabaret, but Fips Asmussen was best known to a larger audience as a joke uncle on television, where he quickly got to the punch line with short, often very simple gags while standing at the real or imagined counter . In the course of his career he recorded around 50 records. From the seventies he was also repeatedly used as a stupid bard and reinterpreted hits.
