Hilary Swank has appeared in a number of films and series since she was a teenager. In 2014, things suddenly turned quiet around the actress: The two-time Oscar winner put her Hollywood career on hold for several years to take care of her sick father.

As the 46-year-old now told the "Health" magazine, he got a lung transplant that year. Her break was originally planned to be much shorter. "It should be a year because it takes a year to see if an organ transplant is successful," she said. But she has meanwhile become her father's health advocate. "One year quickly turned into two, and then three," said Swank.

For the actress, the time was evidently anything but easy: "It takes a lot of energy, love and building up yourself to find your way around the matter," says Swank. "The ups and downs are so challenging and can be overwhelming." It is important to take time for yourself and to let people around you know your needs so that they can support.

Now, more than five years later, her father is fine - and Swank was able to turn back to acting in 2017. In the same year she was seen in a few roles.

At the beginning of this year she also played in the social satire "The Hunt". She takes the lead role in the Netflix series "Away", which comes out in September.
