(ANSA) - ROME, AUGUST 13 - In order to obtain an updated estimate of the wolf population and its distribution in Italy, next October, until March 2021, the first coordinated national wolf monitoring plan will start with 4,000 operators, thanks to advanced techniques of investigation and patrols in about 1,000 cells of ten square kilometers on the entire territory from the Alps to Calabria. The monitoring coordinated by the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (Ispra) which received a mandate from the Ministry of the Environment, for the first time since the wolf was protected, is based on advanced sampling and standardized protocol designs, developed by the same institute, for which Regions, National Parks and Forestry Police will be involved.

"To respond to this ambitious challenge - explains Ispra -, we have created a specialized working group, which involves zoologists and geneticists, and activated a collaboration with Federparchi Europarc Italia (the Italian Federation of Parks and Natural Reserves) and with the Life WolfAlps-Eu project. ".

"The wolf is one of the best known species in Italy, but also one of the most elusive and difficult to study" adds PieroGenovesi, head of the Wildlife Coordination Service of Ispra, reiterating that "all the projects activated so far" in fact "have had a local and limited character over time. , limiting the possibility of producing an accurate estimate at the national level ". Furthermore, in the same period, the Life Wolfalps-Eu project will coordinate and carry out a similar sampling in the Alpine regions, from Liguria to Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Ispra will therefore ensure a training path, including online, for the technical staff involved and will produce an Application, downloadable by monitoring operators, which uses standardized protocols also used in other European countries.
