As the canton police announced, the men had taken a tour in the Parlitobel gorge near the Pfäfers community on Wednesday.
After the storm, they were initially reported missing, three were finally found dead after a night search. Because of the weather conditions, the search had to be interrupted and could only be continued on Thursday morning. The police announced further information in the afternoon.
The Parlitobel is a gorge in the Sarganserland, which sinks from 3107 meters above sea level to 1343 meters. When hiking in gorges, also known as canyoning, people climb or swim through gorges or abseil down.
The Parlitobel is known for canyoning, and according to the Reuters news agency, the region also advertises it on a tourism website.
According to Reuters, the incident is reminiscent of an accident in the Swiss mountains that resulted in 21 deaths around two decades ago.
