2020-08-15T20:55:00.548Z

From this Sunday, wearing a mask is mandatory in 7 central arrondissements of Marseille as well as in other large towns.

In the Bouches-du-Rhône where, like Paris, the circulation of Covid-19 is “active”, the obligation to wear a mask is extended. New areas are concerned from Sunday morning at 8 am.

In Marseille

Already compulsory since August 8 in certain districts of the second largest city in France, especially around the Old Port, the wearing of the mask will be extended to all of the first seven districts of Marseille - the most central - (which has 16) , said Pierre Dartout, the prefect of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.

The obligation is also extended “to the outdoor spaces of shopping centers such as Plan-de-Campagne”, a large shopping area near Marseille.

The other cities concerned

Thirteen other cities are concerned. Two types of municipalities are targeted by the decree: the most important municipalities in the department which have an attractive and dense center, such as Aix-en-Provence, and Arles, but also the most touristic municipalities, whether they are on the shores of the Mediterranean, like Cassis, La Ciotat, Carry-le-Rouet, or inland like Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Baux-de-Provence.

For each, "the perimeter has been delimited in agreement with the mayors", specifies Pierre Dartout.

Transportation

The prefect has also issued an order requiring anyone over 11 to wear a mask "when they are in a waiting area to access public transport by land, river or sea", such as bus stops .

Friday, the mayor of Marseille, Michèle Rubirola (left union and environmentalists) announced to have asked the Metropolis, community in charge of public transport, a "strengthening of means and frequencies of journeys".

In response to a journalist's question on this subject, the prefect indicated that he found "desirable that the Metropolis provides an answer" to this concern.

The town hall of Marseille also asked the State on Saturday "to put the necessary means to ensure the safety of all residents and the many visitors present this summer".

Reinforced controls from Monday

From Monday, police reinforcements are expected throughout the department and 703 control operations will be carried out, announced Denis Mauvais, chief of staff of the prefect of police, who added that "tickets have already been drawn up in Marseillee.

The department like Paris exceeded an alert threshold this week according to the deputy director of the Regional Health Agency, Sébastien Debeaumont.

The 20-40 year olds are the most affected

On August 15, the incidence rate of the virus in the Bouches-du-Rhône was 58.40 per 100,000 inhabitants, against 47.1 per 100,000 a week earlier.

The age group most affected is that of 20-40 years, underlined the deputy director of the Regional Health Agency, who warned against clusters (foci of contamination) caused by family reunions, in particular weddings.

“It is clear that several ingredients continue to deteriorate the indicators in the department, on the one hand the tourist dimension but also the fact that many inhabitants have decided to spend the holidays here,” he continued.
