(ANSA) - MOSCOW, AUGUST 15 - Russia has declared that it has produced the first batch of its coronavirus vaccine, after President Vladimir Putin announced, last Tuesday, that he had approved, the first in the world, a vaccine against Covid-19 .
Putin's announcement of the vaccine was met with caution by scientists and the World Health Organization who believe further security checks are necessary. Putin has assured that the vaccine is safe, enough to have it inoculated to one of his daughters, even if the clinical studies were not yet completed and only this week the final phase test involving more than 2,000 people began.
The Russian vaccine, named Sputnik V after the first Soviet-era satellite launched into space in 1957, was developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute in Moscow, in coordination with the Russian Defense Ministry. The head of the institute, Alexander Gintsburg, told Tass that the volunteers who take part in the final phase of the safety and efficacy tests of the vaccine will undergo double administration. Industrial-scale production of the vaccine is expected to start in September. By December or January, Russia plans to produce 5 million doses per month, first available to doctors and subsequently available to everyone on a voluntary basis. With over 917,000 confirmed infections, Russia remains the fourth country in the world after the United States, Brazil and India for the spread of the coronavirus. (HANDLE).
