Weather in Germany: hot and thunderstorm

The weather remains volatile in large parts of Germany. The German Weather Service (DWD) predicts heavy thunderstorms with heavy rain in areas this Saturday, with the exception of the north and northeast. Extreme storms are possible locally.

A storm with heavy rain led to numerous fire brigade operations in parts of North Rhine-Westphalia on Friday evening and Saturday night. The masses of water have reportedly flooded streets, flushed manhole covers and filled basements. Trees were also overturned by the storm. No victims have been reported so far.

In the Warendorf district in the Münsterland alone, the fire brigade reported 375 missions, and there were still isolated missions on Saturday morning. "Thunderstorms happen from time to time, but that was the tip of the iceberg in the past two years," said a spokesman. The storm also caused damage in the Ruhr area. In Dortmund, the fire brigade has counted 70 missions since Friday evening, as a spokesman reported.

The worst of the storms raged in the northern Ruhr area and in the Münsterland, said a meteorologist from the German Weather Service. Most of the heavy rain was measured at 86.5 liters per square meter in Wadersloh in the Warendorf district.

In the east and northeast it should be dry and partly sunny

The new week will begin on Monday with showers and sometimes strong thunderstorms, but the situation in the southwest and west will gradually calm down at noon. In the east and northeast it will be dry and partly sunny. Expected maximum values: up to 32 degrees.

For Tuesday the DWD expects changeable clouds with partly heavy showers and thunderstorms, with maximum temperatures between 23 and 28 degrees. In the night of Wednesday there will be more showers in areas with changing clouds and initially also to thunderstorms. Otherwise it might be cloudy or clear and dry.

"By Friday, however, the next warming is already on the horizon - how strong this will be is still uncertain," said Tobias Reinartz from the weather forecast center, according to a message. On Saturday the warming would probably be over again.
