(ANSA) - ROME, AUGUST 16 - The opposition in Belarus is taking to the streets, one week after the disputed 'Bulgarian' election of Alexander Lukashenko, in the hope of gathering a huge crowd to challenge the father-master of the country in what has been anticipated as "March for Freedom".
Meanwhile, in Minsk itself, a pro-Lukashenko meeting-demonstration is also taking place, while images circulate on Twitter of rows of buses of alleged supporters of the president being conveyed to the capital.
Yesterday Lukashenko addressed an appeal to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin: "We have reached an agreement with him (Putin) and as requested by us, we will be given full assistance to ensure the security of Belarus", the Belarusian leader assured.
Also yesterday in Minsk, thousands of people attended the funeral of opposition demonstrator Alexander Taraikovsky, killed in clashes with police last Monday, a funeral which turned into a peaceful protest demonstration. (HANDLE).
